- You have two different jobs. Watching competitors and understanding your own account are different products. Most tools do one and market both — know which one you actually need.
- Nobody can show you competitor ROAS. Don't pay extra for a tool that implies it can. That data is modeled, not measured. Run duration is the real signal, and it's free.
- You shouldn't need two subscriptions. Spy databases ignore your ad account; the analytics heavyweights start at $750/mo. You can get both jobs done for $49.
Yes, we make one of the tools in this comparison. You should read everything here — including the nice things we say about ourselves — with that in mind. But most "best ad spy tools" roundups are affiliate link farms that have never run a Meta account, so we're going to attempt something unusual: an honest map of the category, including what our competitors do better than us.
First, untangle two different jobs
"Ad intelligence" tools get lumped together, but they do two fundamentally different jobs:
- Looking outward — what are competitors running? This works from Meta's public Ad Library data: creatives, copy, start dates, status. Nobody in this category has competitor performance data, because it doesn't exist publicly. Any tool implying it can see a competitor's ROAS is estimating.
- Looking inward — which of your ads work? This requires connecting your own ad account, and the honest version also checks Meta's claims against your store's actual revenue.
Most tools do one job. The interesting question is what doing both — and keeping history — should cost.

Where each option genuinely shines
Meta Ad Library (free). The source of truth everyone builds on. Perfect for an occasional peek at one brand. Its two structural limits: it deletes ads the moment they stop, and it can't sort by anything useful.
BigSpy ($9+). The budget pick, wide platform coverage. A search engine over a big index — you get breadth, not tracking depth or history for a specific brand.
Foreplay ($49+). The best save-and-organize workflow in the business. If your job is building swipe files and briefing editors, it's excellent. It archives what you save; it isn't a tracker that watches brands for you.
Minea ($49+). Really a product-research tool for dropshipping wearing a spy-tool coat. If you're hunting winning products rather than studying brand strategy, it's a fine fit.
AdSpy ($149+). The old-guard database with an enormous index and powerful search operators. Strong for affiliate-style discovery across the whole ecosystem; weaker as a per-brand strategy tracker.
MagicBrief and Atria (~$99–150+). Modern creative-analytics platforms — connect your account, get AI tagging and briefs. Good products for creative teams. Competitor features are inspiration-oriented (save and tag) more than archival tracking.
Motion (from $750/mo in 2026). The category heavyweight: deep own-account creative analytics, AI agents, frame-by-frame video analysis, attribution integrations. If you spend $50k+/month on ads and have a dedicated creative-strategy team, it's built for you — and priced accordingly.
What you actually get with Adshelf (and what you don't)
We built Adshelf because we ran a DTC brand and wanted three specific things every week — and couldn't buy them in one place for less than the price of a car lease:
- Every competitor ad, remembered forever. When you check a rival's library on Monday morning, you see everything they've ever run since tracking began — including the ad they killed on Friday and hoped nobody noticed. Stopped ads keep their run durations, so their winners sort themselves to the top (here's why that works).
- Your real numbers, not Meta's version of them. Spend, CPP, ROAS, hook rate — with Meta-reported revenue checked against what your store actually took in, daily. Meta grades its own homework. You deserve a second grader.
- A briefing, not a pile of screenshots. The AI synopsis reads a brand's entire active library and tells you the messaging themes they're funding and which one their oldest winners support — the kind of summary you could paste straight into your Monday creative meeting. (See it live on the example page.)
And the honest cons, so you're not surprised: we're new — no five-year archive, no 150-million-ad index, no TikTok or Google coverage yet (Meta only, same as the big tools' core coverage). History runs deep for tracked brands, not every brand on earth: your shelf starts filling the day a brand is first tracked, so the sooner you add your competitors, the more their history works for you. And if you need frame-by-frame video analytics or enterprise integrations today, the $750/month tools genuinely do more of that.
The math, since nobody else will show it
The decision guide
The short version, by who you are: running your own ads for your own brand? Adshelf does both jobs — competitor history plus your honest numbers — from $49/month with a free 14-day trial, no card. Creative team at a $100k/month spender? Buy the heavyweight tools; they're good and your budget won't feel it. Just want to peek at one competitor once? The free Ad Library plus our 5-step framework will take you far — come back when you're tired of screenshots.
